What Are the Requirements for Pet Birds?
If you are looking for a bird as a pet, you need to know the following requirements –
Housing
Initially, the suitable size of a cage is important. It should be at least one and a half times as wide, deep, or high as the bird’s wingspan. This ample room makes it possible for the bird to roam.
However, if you intend to keep several birds together in a cage, it is crucial to make modifications to ensure there is enough space for each bird.
Apart from that, be careful about where the cage is positioned in your home. Some birds benefit from the noise; others may require a more peaceful environment. So, it is best not to position the cage by a window as predators may cause stress in birds.
Besides, the practice of covering the cage at night is optional. If your bird can sleep well under the cover and feels comfortable with it, this may provide a sense of privacy and even safety.
Place your bird at the level of perch to make him feel safe. Choose natural perches to avoid foot injuries. In that sense, avoid galvanized or copper wire cages.
Accordingly, it is crucial to keep the surroundings clean. Clean the cage, its perches, and toys as well as feed dishes regularly.
Nutrition
Food is an important ingredient for a happy pet bird. If they do not eat well, their health suffers. Most bird issues (around 80%-90%) are caused by poor diets.
However, seeds with all nutrients intact fulfill the essential components like calcium amino acids vitamins A and B.
Diets specifically for birds are called pellets. These are especially formulated to provide birds with everything they need.
Likewise, birds feed on fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Carrots, apples, and grapes make good selections.
As protein is important for birds, make them have some eggs, beans, or even bits of peanut butter. In addition, provide a daily vitamin and mineral supplement.
Remember to take away the leftover fresh food and gradually introduce new foods. If a bird looks diseased, visit the veterinarian.
How to Breed and Reproduce Pet Birds?
Breeding pet birds involves careful behavior that includes pair selection based on age, and health. Despite the highly variable breeding season, proper lighting and other conditions must be provided.
Accordingly, the female must have the necessary nesting boxes that are full of shredded material to build good nests.
Actually, breeding success is determined by the size of suitable breeding cages and proper environmental conditions that could reduce noise.
Then, according to the species to which they belong, chicks can be separated and hand reared.
