Finches Bird Habitat – Explore the Lands of Songbirds

Kawkab Nadim

Finches, the melodious-voiced birds, are one of the most common birds in the Northern hemisphere of the world.

Widely, they are found in the Eurasian areas (that means in the northern part of Europe and Asia), South America, Australia and the African regions are not deprived of them.

In those areas, finches are found in the desert, dry land, rainforests and woodlands. But you can’t find all of them in one place. Hence, to know their distribution according to their variety, you have to move forward.

Types of Finches Around the World

I am frightened that you might have problems understanding the chart. Also, I need to put some detailed information about those areas where finches are gathered. Hence, scroll below for extra information.

House finch

House Finches are found chirping in the Northern Part of South America and North America. To be clearer, parts of Canada, the USA and South America are their native places.

In these places, savannah areas, rainforests, drylands or desert lands, high mountains like Rocky Mountains, grassland and stream sides are known as their kingdom.

House finch

Among them, stream sides are their most preferable habitat. Sometimes, you may see them in the barn fields in rural areas and also in the coniferous forest.

Besides, people of urban places in these countries also enjoy their beautiful colors and melodious voices. Also, house finches are easy to domesticate. They can be your lovely pets.

Chaffinch

The chaffinches are always a source of beauty in Eurasian nature. Sounds difficult? Let me make this clear. Eurasia is the conjugated or middle part of Europe and Asia. The orange breast, white-bellied and blue-headed chaffinches are found in this area.

Chaffinch Bird

Mostly, they are abundant in countries like Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran and in the Himalayan areas. But the American and African regions are also not deprived of them. Alaska is the land of blue chaffinches. Some varieties of them are also found in Africa at a high range.

Rosefinch

Rosefinches are another beautiful edition of nature in the North American region. The United States of America, especially its alpine tundra region holds a variety of rosefinches.

Almost all the rosefinches are found in the tundra region as they are habituated to the same type of climate. Among them, the most found are gray-crowned rosy finches.

Purple Finch

The next one is the purple finch type that is also found in different states of the USA like California, Florida and so on. However, the boreal forests are more abundant than others.

Purple Finch

Also, you will get purple finches if you visit montane and northern forests. They are the assets of American rainforests. But, along with them, Western forests commonly have plenty of Cassin’s finch.

Goldfinch

Unlike the purple finches, the goldfinches are the birds of Northern Europe. Mostly, countries like Scotland, England and some Asian countries are the residents of goldfinches.

Different bushy areas are preferable to them. Apart from those, they love to make their habitats in forest edges. Like the house finches, you can also nurture them in your gardens by domesticating them.

However, if you are an American citizen, you need not be worried. Because goldfinches are common in Texas and California and some other dry areas of the USA. They mostly love the open woodlands.

Grass Finches

I think the most different type of true finch is the Zebra finch having zebra-like lines in their throats. Well, this zebra finch is a type of Australian grass finch.

From the name, you can easily understand that they reside in Australia. Different dry lands, drier woodlands and grasslands are their favorite spot for residing.

Sometimes, you can also see some of the grassfinches in the bordering watercourses. But they are infrequent in wet periods. In that time, you can see them less than in other periods.

Gouldian Finches

Next, I am going to tell you about Gouldian finches. They are also native to Australia. You might have learned about the Derby that is in West Australia. These finches are the inhabitants of that region.

Gouldian Finches

The sub-coastal region, especially the tropical northern regions is a favorable place for them to reside without any effect. These ashy gray finches are preferable to domesticate than most other finches.

IUCN Red List Status of Finches

Did the information about finches’ habitat make you happy that you can find finches almost in the whole world? But in parallel, there is a sad fact too. That is, these pretty finches are becoming threatened day by day.

According to the IUCN Red List, some finches like mangrove finches are marked as critically endangered species. Also, some finch species like purple finch and Gouldian finches are considered threatened species.

Though zebra finches are still the least concerned, they are also declining day by day. Other true type finches are also rarely found nowadays according to ornithologists.

Threats for the Habitat of Finches

You already know that finches are becoming threatened day by day. Hence, according to my thoughts, you are now eager to know about the reasons why they are facing threats.

Threats for the Habitat of Finch

If I am right, find your answer from these points.

Climate change

The first reason that is making the finches threatened is climate change. From the consensus of America, I found that about 99% of Purple Finch may die due to the increasing summer temperature.

This temperature is going beyond the tolerance level or summer range of the finches. That’s why they are losing their lives.

Habitat Loss

Next, let’s talk about their habitat loss. What happened to us? Think one time! As we are indiscriminately destroying the forests, where will these forest birds go who have a wide habitat in these places?

Yeah! That is the point. They are losing their habitat day by day due to the cruelty and greediness of human beings for forests. And without habitat, they are not getting sanctuaries for breeding and are dying continuously.

Competition With Other Finches

Here comes an internal quarrel that is created due to their habitat loss. For example, purple finches have to compete with house finches for food, shelter and breeding zones.

As they are continuously losing habitats, they are not getting plenty of necessary things that they can use separately. This phenomenon is increasing competition among species, and they are losing their lives.

Salmonella infection

Not only competition but also diseases and infections kill them. Salmonella infection is spread by the bird feeders. Due to these diseases, several finch species are attacked dangerously. Thus, they are decreasing.

Forest Fire

One of the most natural diminishing causes of finches is forest fires. Forest fires are common natural disasters in many countries. At that time, many finches were killed in that fire.

Chemical Poison/Pesticides

I have mentioned in this article that some finches are found in the fields and barrens of rural areas. Nowadays, for more production of agricultural goods, farmers are applying pesticides at a huge range.

Hence, think for a second. As those finches live in these fields, they take their food from there. As a result, they are coming in contact with those poisons and are losing their lives.

Predators

Predators are one of the most common issues for finches. They are predated by many wild animals and other house pets. Some common predators are snakes, jays, raccoons, rats, owls, crows and cats.

Invasive species

Now, I want to finish the list by talking about the invasive species. Many times, they face different invasive animals and birds in their region. In that case, if the species are too voracious, they can’t survive in that region.

Whatever, apart from those, you may find a lot of reasons for finches’ threats. I have discussed the focal points here. If we can’t mitigate these problems urgently, I am afraid that we may have to lose this beautiful bird family completely.

How to Conserve Finches’ Habitat?

While there is a will, there is a way. It is high time we should use this popular proverb in saving finches. Meanwhile, you have learned that finches are declining fast due to several reasons.

How to Conserve Finches’ Habitat

Hence, we should take proper measures immediately to save them. In this case, let me share my thoughts for their saving purpose.

  • We should stop destroying the forests immediately so that they can reside in their natural habitat without any difficulties. This will also decrease the competition among them.
  • All the reasons that are responsible for the increment of global temperature should be checked. We should work against climate change to save our world. That will be precious for the finches too.
  • Using pesticides should be under control.
  • Every country should abide by the Conservation laws strictly to stop the introduction of invasive species.
  • Sanctuaries should be established for the breeding of extremely threatened and endangered species.
  • Humans should not kill them for feeding or any other purpose.

Well, these are my compliments in this case. However, experts and researchers have been working on it for a long time and they are finding different preservation ways.

In that case, you can study the below paper for a detailed overview of their conservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you still have some further askings left regarding finches’ habitat, have your eyes here.

Are finches abundant in grasslands?

Yeah! Finches are granivorous, meaning they eat the seeds of grasses. That’s why they are abundant in grasslands and rainforests from where they can get their food.

Are house finches comfortable as pets?

Definitely. House finches are the most domesticated type of finches that you can rear in your garden or inside your house. By providing enough care, they can easily breed in a house.

Can finches survive everywhere?

No. Though finches are found almost all over the world, they vary from place to place. Mostly, they can’t tolerate extreme hot weather, and in those areas, or in the extreme summer periods, you may not find finches.

Final Words

A lot of gossiping has happened and now it’s my time to end. Songbirds like finches are beautiful versions of nature. Also, they are spread around the world.

Then, why will we lose them due to our inhumane activities? A little consciousness and some projects can save them properly. Hence, we all should work from our place to create a beautiful world for them.

Thus, they will be able to create melodious tunes for us to make our morning beautiful. Otherwise, we have to lose a lot of birds in this way.
